SECURITY & DATA GOVERNANCE REALITY CHECK
Before deciding what to change, understand what's really happening.
An independent view of where you really are, what deserves attention, and what we believe you should do next.
You don't need to know exactly what's wrong.
Maybe something isn't working. Maybe your Security or Data Governance posture needs to improve. Or perhaps you already have a clear idea of what needs to change.
The starting point doesn't have to be certainty.
The Reality Check starts with what you know today - and tests it against what's actually happening.
Something isn't working.
Understand what - and why.
You see the symptoms: recurring issues, unclear ownership, friction, exposure or decisions that aren't being made. But the underlying cause isn't clear.
We need to improve.
Understand where to focus.
You want to strengthen your Security or Data Governance posture or maturity, but aren't sure where attention and investment will make the greatest difference.
We think we know what needs to change.
Challenge it before you commit.
You have a proposed initiative, framework, target state or solution. We test whether it addresses the right problem before significant effort or investment follows.
Different starting points. Same question:Where should we actually focus?
The problem may not be where it appears.
-
Who owns what — in reality?
Structure, accountability and decision rights — including where ownership overlaps or disappears between functions.
-
What is the organization actually trying to achieve?
Business direction, priorities and value streams — and whether governance supports them or works against them.
-
How does technology actually operate?
Technology, delivery practices, dependencies and the information available to make sound decisions.
-
Are decisions connected?
How architecture and technology decisions are made — and whether business, architecture, Security and Data Governance are pulling in the same direction.
-
How does governance work in practice?
Policies, responsibilities and processes — not simply whether they exist, but how they influence actual decisions and behaviour.
-
What really needs protecting — and from what?
How risk is understood and treated, whether controls address meaningful risks, and whether they work in practice.
A Security problem may start with ownership.
A Data Governance problem may be rooted in business processes.
A control problem may actually be an architecture problem.
And what looks like a maturity gap may be governance that no longer fits how the organization operates.
That's why we don't examine Security or Data Governance in isolation.
We follow the problem across the relevant parts of the organization - far enough to understand what's driving it.
Not every Reality Check goes equally deep into every area.
We start with the question and follow the evidence. The scope expands where necessary to understand the underlying problem - not because a predefined methodology says it should.
How the Reality Check works
Start with the question. Follow what we find.
Every Reality Check starts with what brought you here - a problem, an ambition to improve, or a direction you want challenged.
From there, the depth of the engagement follows what we need to understand.
Understand
Start with your perspective.
We explore what prompted the Reality Check, what you believe needs attention, what you've already tried and what better would look like.
Form a view
Look beyond the symptoms.
We connect what we're hearing across the relevant parts of the organization and develop an initial view of what may actually be driving the situation.
Sometimes that confirms the original concern. Sometimes it points somewhere else.
Validate
Go deeper where it matters.
Where needed, we test our view through additional stakeholder conversations and relevant evidence.
We gather what helps answer the question - not what's on a standard checklist.
Challenge
Test the assumptions.
We challenge the original diagnosis, priorities and proposed direction against what we've learned.
The question isn't simply, “What could be improved?”
What actually deserves attention?
Give direction
Turn understanding into a clear next move.
We bring what we've learned together and establish where attention should go next.
What you leave with
Clarity on where you are - and where to go next.
Not a list of everything that could be improved.
A view of what actually matters.
At the end of a Reality Check, you will have an independent view of where you really are, what deserves attention, and what we believe you should do next.
Where you really are
A grounded perspective on how things work in practice — not only how they are described in policies, frameworks or assessments.
What deserves attention
The issues, risks, dependencies or weaknesses that matter most - including where the apparent problem may be a symptom of something else.
What doesn't need your attention
Not every gap deserves a programme of work. If something can wait, be accepted, be handled internally or simply isn't the problem, we'll say so.
Why it matters
Our view of what's driving the situation, connecting recommendations to context rather than isolated findings.
What we believe you should do next
A clear direction - whether that's focused improvement, deeper investigation, broader change or something your own organization can address.
Start with a conversation
A Reality Check isn't automatically the right starting point.
Tell us what you're trying to understand, improve or challenge. We'll have an initial conversation to understand the situation and determine whether a Reality Check is the right way forward.
